For suitable residential glass, Clear Guard recommends XPEL Security Clear 14 mil installed inside, paired with DOWSIL 995 structural attachment. We install XPEL and assess the glass and frame before specifying the work.
XPEL also makes Exterior Security Clear 7 mil for the outside surface. These are separate products with different application sides. Choose the film and installation for your window, rather than choosing a thickness alone.
The purpose is personal: added resistance after glass breaks, with more opportunity to move your family away and call for help. Properly specified, installed and attached film can slow an intruder. IWFA safety and security.
What the thickness number tells you
A mil is one thousandth of an inch. It measures thickness, not minutes of protection or the force an installed window will withstand. NIST thickness definition.
The product name also matters. XPEL's clear 14 mil security film belongs inside; its clear exterior security film is 7 mil. A bigger number does not make an interior film suitable for exterior installation.

Why we recommend XPEL 14 mil inside
Security Clear 14 mil is a clear, multilayer interior film. Its nominal material figures are 30,000 psi tensile strength, 420 lb/in break strength and 230 lb puncture resistance. XPEL 14 mil specification, pages 1–2.
Tensile and break figures describe resistance when a film specimen is pulled; puncture concerns penetration under concentrated loading. Together, they give us reasons to choose this material for the barrier remaining after glass fractures.
At a ground-floor living-room window, you may want to keep your clear view while adding resistance near the space your family uses. Film helps hold broken fragments together; the frame connection helps retain the filmed pane.
The material figures do not predict how many seconds your installed window will resist entry.
Where exterior 7 mil fits
XPEL Exterior Security Clear 7 mil is a clear, single-layer film specified for the outside window surface. It is a separate exterior product, rather than the interior 14 mil film moved outside. XPEL exterior specification, page 1.
An exterior proposal must account for safe access, glass preparation and suitable installation conditions at your home.
For a Toronto patio slider, we check access around the track and frame and explain installation, curing and cleaning arrangements. Exterior work must follow the product instructions and the conditions at your home.
Tell us if there is already film on the glass. We check the existing treatment and manufacturer compatibility before recommending work; we do not automatically specify film on both sides. XPEL compatibility guidance, page 3.
Film and frame attachment work together
Film holds fractured glass together. Structural perimeter attachment helps connect that filmed pane to its frame. Clear Guard pairs XPEL with DOWSIL 995 where the assessed glass and frame support that installation.
Dow describes 995 anchoring retrofit protective window film to a frame. XPEL's instructions also describe wet-glaze attachment. Dow brochure, printed page 6, and the XPEL 14 mil specification, page 3 §3.5 and exterior 7 mil specification, page 3 §3.5.
We assess the frame surface and condition, the attachment detail, preparation and curing requirements. A thicker film cannot repair a damaged frame or replace attention to the patio-door lock.
When you also want privacy
Glass beside a front door or a low bathroom window can expose more of your home than you want. Raise that concern during the assessment, alongside your security priorities.
A frosted appearance tells you about visibility; it does not identify a security product or prove its strength. The proposal should name the exact film and explain the finish and security suitability together.
Consider where you need an obscured view and where you want to see outside. Review a sample before choosing a finish.
Choose the work around your home
Start with reachable glass that concerns you: a patio door beside the kitchen, basement glass near grade, or a sidelight close to the door lock. Walk those locations with the assessor and explain how your family uses the rooms.
We consider glass type and condition, the frame, any existing film and installation access. On a condominium property, check the building's approval process before arranging work on shared or controlled glass and frames.
Your written proposal should identify the product, application side, panes being treated and attachment. Ask how to use the door and clean the glass after installation, and which product-specific warranty terms apply.
